DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team was edged 5-4 by Rollins in a four-hour battle, Wednesday at the Tars' Tiedtke Tennis Courts. The loss put the Eagles at 2-7, while the Tars evened their record at 5-5.
Each team notched three wins apiece in singles, but the edge went to Rollins in doubles. Savanna Fuller and Teresa Kaiser scored the Tars' first point with an 8-4 win over
Ana Gonzalez-Hoy and
Lydia Carter at No. 3 doubles, and Carlye Goldman and Shannon Etten topped
Kathryn Bock and
Maria Turrillo by the same score on court two to put Rollins up 2-0.
The Eagles got a point back when the top-flight pair of
Maud Mrad and
Alexis Marshall held off Fabiana Vitanza and Alexandra Borg 9-7.
The first singles match off the court was at the second position where Etten downed
Georgina Wood 6-2, 6-1. Kaiser widened the Rollins lead to 4-1 with her 6-1, 6-3 win over Gonzalez-Hoy at No. 6.
The next two points went to the Eagles as Marshall defeated Borg 6-2, 6-0 at the fourth position and Turrillo bested Goldman 6-4, 6-4 on court three.
At the fifth spot, Fuller took the first set 6-2, but Bock rebounded to take the second 6-1 and force a third set. Bock was unable to carry the momentum of her second-set win into the final frame as Fuller won 6-2 to clinch the win for the Tars.
The final match off the court also went to three sets. Vitanza won the first set 6-2, but the final two frames belonged to Mrad who won 6-3, 6-2.
The Eagles will have an extended break before their next match against Saint Leo on March 25 at noon.
