DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team battled Palm Beach Atlantic for close to four hours, but the Eagles were unable to come away with a win, falling to the Sailfish 6-3, Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The loss put the Eagles at 2-10 on the year, while PBAU improved to 4-9.
The first match off the court was at No. 2 doubles where ERAU's
Kathryn Bock and
Maria Turrillo made quick work of Leoni Polzin and Maja Jovic 8-0. PBAU evened the team score at 1-1 when Romina Bolagay and Michaela Mignemi topped
Ana Gonzalez-Hoy and
Lydia Carter 8-1 on court three.
Trailing 5-4, the PBAU team of Taylor Conti and Valerie Nagovitcina fought back to top
Maud Mrad and
Alexis Marshall 8-5, giving the Sailfish a 2-1 edge.
Playing at No. 2 singles, Turrillo was efficient in her straight-set victory over Polzin, defeating the PBAU freshman 6-1, 6-2. Gonzalez-Hoy gave the Eagles a brief lead with her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Florencia Roncatti at the sixth spot, but Bolagay tied the match again with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Bock on court four and Michaela Mignemi reclaimed the lead for the Sailfish by topping Carter 6-2, 6-2 on court five.
The last two matches off the court both went to three sets. At No. 1 singles, Nagovitcina took the first set 6-3, but Mrad forced an extra frame with a 6-1 win in the second. In the third Nagovitcina registered an early break and used that momentum to record the clincher, winning the set 6-2.
The match at the third spot between Marshall and Conti, saw Conti take the first set 6-4 and Marshall take the second 6-2. The third set was closely contested and in the end Conti was able to hold off Marshall 6-4 to cap the scoring for the Sailfish.
The Eagles' next match will be at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Eckerd at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
