DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the second time in as many seasons, the Embry-Riddle women's tennis team was able to pull out a 5-4 win over Lewis. Playing at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Wednesday, the Eagles battled the Flyers for 4.5 hours before emerging with the win. ERAU improves to 3-5 with win, while Lewis moves to 4-3 with the loss.
The Eagles gained a 2-0 advantage when the Flyers defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, but Lewis was able to level the score when Nora Mindiyarova and Simona Parn topped
Kathryn Bock and
Maria Turrillo 8-4 on court two, and Dora Andrejski and Oana Carmen Trus downed Sabrina Ehrenfort and
Georgina Wood by the same score at No. 1 doubles.
Bock was efficient in earning the Eagles' first singles point of the day as she blanked Claudia Maka 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles spot, but 30
th-ranked Andrejski pulled the Flyers even with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Turrillo at the top spot.
Mindiyarova gave the Flyers their first lead of the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Krvajica at the second position. At No. 3 singles, Wood dropped the first set 6-2, but bested Trus 6-1 in the second. The third set saw the ERAU sophomore go up 4-1, but Trus won five of the next six games to go up 6-5. Wood held serve to knot the score at 6-6 and won the tiebreaker 7-3 to tie the match at 4-4.
The final match off the court was at No. 4 singles where Ehrenfort held off Parn 7-6 (7-3) in a first set that lasted two hours. The second frame saw Ehrenfort fall behind 5-4, but the ERAU freshman held serve then broke Parn to win 7-5 and clinch the victory for the Blue and Gold.
The Eagles will be back in action at the Crotty Tennis Complex at noon Monday when they host West Chester.
