Eagles Down Bees in Top 10 Battle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Battling very windy conditions, the Embry-Riddle women's tennis team emerged on the winning end of a battle between two of the top 10 teams in the NAIA, as the third-ranked Eagles defeated No. 8 SCAD Savannah (2-2, 1-1) in Sun Conference play on Sunday, 8-1.

The 14th-ranked tandem of Kristina Marova and Paola Montero made quick work of Ana Dominguez and Andrea Gonzalez, downing the SCAD pair 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Seventh-ranked Rocio Frej Vitalle and Ekaterina Kamendova were the next off the court after topping SCAD's Maria Barragan and Carolina Viteri 8-3.

At No. 1 doubles, 12th-ranked Magda Bresson and Theresa Schmaus came from behind to overtake ERAU's fourth-ranked Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Strom. Leading 6-5, the SCAD tandem broke the Eagles and then held serve to win the match 8-5 and give the Bees a team point.

Singles play saw eighth-ranked Chen dispatch No. 12 Schmaus 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot, followed closely by No. 28 Marova who blanked Viteri 6-0, 6-0 on the fourth court. The clincher came at the No. 2 spot where fifth-ranked Frej Vitalle downed No. 23 Bresson in straight sets (6-1, 6-3) to help the Blue and Gold improve to 5-1 on the year and 4-0 in league play.

The matches on courts five and six also went the Eagles' way as Strom bested Debrey 6-4, 6-2 and Montero topped Dominguez 6-4, 6-1.

The final match off the court was at No. 3 singles where 14th-ranked Kamendova battled No. 48 Barragan. Barragan took the first set 6-4, but Kamendova fought back to force a decisive third set with a 6-2 win in the second. Kamendova went up 4-2 early in the third and went on to complete the Eagles' singles sweep with a 10-6 third-set victory.

The Eagles will have more than a week to prepare for their next match, which will be against NAIA No. 6 Brenau on Mar. 1 at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
