Lady Pirates Outlast Eagles 7-2

Ekaterina Kamendova tallied the Eagles' only point in singles play against Armstrong Atlantic State

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Armstrong Atlantic State won two of three doubles and five of six singles matches to take a 7-2 victory over Embry-Riddle in a women's tennis match featured the third-ranked teams in the NAIA and NCAA Division II on Thursday. The decision marked the only home loss for the Eagles, ranked third in the NAIA, who are now 17-3 on the year. The Lady Pirates stay perfect on the year at20-0 with the win.
 
The Eagles got off to a strong start as 10th-ranked Ekaterina Kamendova and Rocio Frej Vitalle easily dispatched the NCAA II's No. 10 pair of Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa 8-2 at the second position. At No. 3 doubles, AASU's 15th-ranked tandem of Kathleen Henry and Clara Perez came from behind to top Kristina Marova and Giovanna Tomiotto, playing together for the first time this season, 8-5. The doubles match-up at the top spot pitted fourth-ranked Barbora Krtickova and Aleksndra Filipovski against NAIA No. 6 Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Strom. The contest required extra sets to determine the outcome and in the end it was AASU team that held of Chen and Strom 9-8 (7-3) to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
 
No. 7 Filipovski's 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 10 Frej Vitalle on court two increased the AASU advantage to 3-1, but 15th-ranked Kamedova got a point back for the Blue and Gold with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 defeat of 20th-ranked Kalodzitsa at No. 3.
 
No. 24 Hacke made quick work of No. 45 Strom 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth spot and No. 30 Perez scored the clincher for AASU with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Tomiotto at No. 6.
 
The remaining singles matches both went to three sets. At the top spot, fourth-ranked Krtickova dropped the first set to sixth-ranked Chen 6-4, but the AASU sophomore fought back to take the second 6-2 and won the match with a 6-3 decision in the third. The singles match on court four saw No. 29 Marova take a 6-2 lead after one stanza, but No. 23 Henry won the second by the same margin and held off the ERAU sophomore 10-6 in the third set to seal the win.
 
The Embry-Riddle women will close out regular season play at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to St. Leo, Fla. to take on NCAA II St. Leo.
