ABOUT THE EAGLESEmbry-Riddle opened the 2015 season with a 9-0 defeat of Ave Maria on Sunday. The Eagles gained an early advantage as Ave Maria defaulted at No. 3 doubles and at the fifth and sixth singles positions, putting the Eagles up 3-0 before the first serve.
Kathryn Bock and
Paula Ortiz Couder quickly made it 4-0 when they downed Jessica Cocks and Alex Liz-Planells 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
At the top doubles spot,
Hui-I Huang and Anna Götz fell behind 3-0 to open the match. But the ERAU duo rebounded and won eight straight games to top Marianna Vargas and Mary Kate Lee 8-3 and seal the Eagle win.
ABOUT THE SAINTSThe Flagler women will be seeing their first action of the season against Embry-Riddle. The Saints, ranked No. 30 ITA/NCAA II preseason poll, were 16-5 overall in 2014 and finished third in the Peach Belt Conference. Two Flagler players are ranked in the ITA/NCAA II singles polls, including Barbora Sebkova (11
th) and Esther Santiago (16
th).
THE ERAU-FC SERIESThe Eagles and the Saints have faced each other in women's tennis 13 times. The last meeting was in 2006, the Saints' last season in the NAIA. Flagler leads the series 8-5.
The Last MeetingEmbry-Riddle picked up its second conference win of 2006 with a 6-3 decision against Flagler on March 3. The Saints were the first on the board in No. 3 doubles as Allison Hess and Amy Montero sat down Racheal Lund and Evan Halhuber 8-1. The Eagles responded in No. 1 and 2 doubles as Nora Kluge and Alex Buttazzoni defeated Viviana Rojas and Sandy Meric 8-4, and Natalie Anaya and Lindsey Kurtz overwhelmed Monica Burbelo and Leigh Ann Moss 8-3 to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
In singles play, ERAU got down to business winning the first three singles matches to seal the Eagle victory. Winning the first singles match was Buttazzoni in the No. 3 position as she dominated Moss 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles Natalie Anaya beat Meric 6-4, 6-3 while Kluge defeated Rojas 7-6, 6-3 to hand Embry-Riddle a 5-1 lead.
Flagler's Hess and Montero came through for the Saints in No. 5 and 6 singles as Hess defeated Lund 6-3, 6-0 and Montero took down Halhuber 6-2, 6-1.
Picking up a win for the Eagles in No. 4 singles was Kurtz as she won over Burbelo.
