ABOUT THE EAGLESNo. 2 Embry-Riddle women's tennis notched its second win of the 2015 season with a 6-3 defeat of NCAA II No. 30 Flagler on Feb. 5. The four-hour long match saw the Eagles win two of three doubles and four of six singles contests. In the match at No. 1 doubles, the ERAU tandem of
Hui-I Huang and
Anna Gotz fell behind 3-0 to start their match, but they rallied to win eight of the next nine games to top Esther Santiago and Mary Jo Nanti 8-4 and give the Eagles the first point of the day. The Eagles also won at No. 3 three doubles, but Flagler got a point back with a win a the No. 2 spot.
The Eagles earned wins at the sixth and fifth positions, and Huang clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the top spot.
ABOUT THE TARSTuesday's contest marks the first of the 2015 season for Rollins. The Tars, who posted a 17-7 record in 2014, will be without All-Sunshine State Conference honorees Elissa DeCampli and Ashley Rosenberg, but return Johanna Olsson, Taylor Brown and Shannon Etten, who is ranked No. 27 in the ITA singles rankings.
THE ERAU-RC SERIESThe Eagles and the Tars have faced each other in women's tennis 13 times. The last meeting was on Feb. 18, 2014 when the Eagles edged the Tars 5-4.
The Last MeetingThe Eagles swept all three doubles matches and won two singles points in the four-hour long contest to edge the Tars 5-4 on Feb. 18, 2014.
Doubles play saw the top-ranked duo of
Kristina Marova and
Hui-I Huang dispatch Elissa DeCampli and Shannon Etten 8-3 at the top doubles spot. The freshman team of
Paula Ortiz Couder and
Eva Vilar extended the Eagle advantage to 2-0 with their 8-6 victory over Ashley Loft and Johanna Olsson at the third position. It took close to 90 minutes to decide the match at No. 3 doubles and in the end, it was ERAU's Anna Götz and
Paola Montero who topped Carli Davis and Marianna Salvador 8-5 to complete the doubles sweep and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Etten got the first point of the evening for the Tars at No. 3 singles when she topped Marova 6-0, 6-3. The next match off the court was at the fourth spot where Vilar put the Eagles up 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Davis.
At the sixth position, Ortiz Couder took a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Olsson bounced back to move ahead 4-3. Ortiz Couder regained her focus and won the next three games to take the set 6-4. In the second set, Olsson led 5-4 and had the chance to serve for the match, but Ortiz Couder registered a break to tie things up at 5-5, then held serve and broke Olsson again to score the clincher for ERAU (7-5).
Rollins won the remaining singles points as Salvador held off Montero (7-5, 7-5), Rosenberg topped Götz 6-4, 6-4 and No. 40 DeCampli bested No. 9 Huang 7-5, 7-5.
