DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the second straight year, the Embry-Riddle women's tennis team was able to pull out a 5-4 victory in a marathon match against NCAA Division II No. 27 ranked Rollins (3-3). The match, which lasted four hours and 30 minutes, saw the Eagles win two doubles and three singles contests to improve to 2-4 on the year.
It took less than 50 minutes for the Eagles to earn their first point of the afternoon as
Paula Ortiz Couder and
Kathryn Bock made quick work of Teresa Kaiser and Johanna Olsson with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. The next match off the court was at No. 1 doubles where
Hui-I Huang and Anna Götz downed Carli Davis and Shannon Etten 8-3. The Tars were able to avoid a doubles sweep as Carlye Goldman and Zoe Monge topped Giovanna Tomiottto and
Meena Bennett 8-5.
The first singles point went to Rollins as Fabiana Vitanza bested Bennett 6-0, 6-0 on court six. Ortiz Couder put the Eagles back on top with her 6-2, 6-4 win over Kaiser at the third spot, but Savanna Fuller tied the match again by holding off Bock 6-4, 7-5 at the fifth flight.
The next match to reach completion was on court two where Götz topped Davis 6-2, 6-4 to put the Eagles within one point of winning the match.
In the last meeting between the Rollins and Embry-Riddle women's tennis teams, Tomiotto clinched a win for the Eagles in a match that lasted five hours and 20 minutes. On Wednesday evening, Tomiotto was the clincher once again. After taking the first set 6-2, the senior stumbled in the second 6-4, but she bounced back in the third with a 6-3 win over Olsson to clinch the Eagle victory.
The match at No. 1 singles between Huang and Etten also needed three sets to determine the outcome. In the end, it was Etten who was able to hold off Huang for the 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
The Eagles close out the week's play at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
