DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The second-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team began defense of its Sun Conference title with a 9-0 victory over Ave Maria, Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
The Eagles gained an early advantage as Ave Maria defaulted at No. 3 doubles and at the fifth and sixth singles positions, putting the Eagles up 3-0 before the first serve.
Kathryn Bock and
Paula Ortiz Couder quickly made it 4-0 when they downed Jessica Cocks and Alex Liz-Planells 8-0 at No. 2 doubles.
At the top doubles spot,
Hui-I Huang and Anna Götz fell behind 3-0 to open the match. But the ERAU duo rebounded and won eight straight games to top Marianna Vargas and Mary Kate Lee 8-3 and seal the Eagle win.
In singles play, Bock earned the first dual match win of her college career with a quick 6-0, 6-1 defeat of Cocks at the third spot. Huang followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vargas at No. 1 singles and Tomiotto, who sat out the 2014 season, earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Lee on court two in her return to dual match play. Jessica Lown dispatched Liz-Planells 6-1, 6-0 to secure the shutout.
The Eagles will be back in action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to St. Augustine to take on Flagler.
